GB- The Irish wanted their independence from Great Britain.
- 1922- Irish leaders signed a treaty with GB which said Ireland was a "free state" but still be a part of GB. Some people were angry and wanted an independent republic. They were known as the Irish Republican Army, IRA. Those who wanted to stay with GB were called "free staters"
- Civil war broke out and IRA wasn't doing well, so began a war across all of Ireland. 1923, the war was over and the free staters won.
- 1949, Ireland became totally independent, but the northern part remained loyal to GB.
- The IRA still exists and has bombed areas of northern Ireland even into the 2000s.
